My late mother would somehow always know when she was going to have unexpected visitors. She would suddenly break off from reading or whatever and start tidying the sitting room and would send one of us upstairs to check the bathroom. She would then go into the kitchen and check for biscuits and cake. If supplies were low, one of us would be sent to the local shop. She never knew who was arriving, but within two hours, they came without fail.
This is something I have been thinking about for a while now (telepathy, waves, neurodiversity). You have taken it to a whole new level. Thank you for explaining so clearly and it was a riveting read.
I also had the stare ability thing. And I have predicted certain things happening to. I wonder if it’s to do with patterns?
Thank you, Margaret! I really appreciate your comment. I don't think the prediction thing is to do with patterns, though. There's no way I could have known about the blue envelope on the mat, and who it was from. I think it is explained by quantum mechanics, and the fact that we are all (to different extents depending on our sensitivities), tapped into the wider net of Consciousness, so that when someone is thinking strongly about us (who we are already 'entangled' with on some level) then their thoughts can merge with our own. I have this experience a lot. A very strong recent example: I finally threw out something belonging to someone I've had no contact with for two years (and had a conversation with my son about it, because he was involved with her), and the *very next day* she sent me a text, out of the blue, saying "I've been thinking about all of you." She wouldn't have known why... but I did!
If you listen to the podcast, it will probably help you in that process, because they explore quite a few aspects of the underlying mechanisms. You can get the link to it (on wherever you listen to podcasts) here: https://thetelepathytapes.com/
Wonderful path you put us on here Ros. Fascinating. There is definitely something here. However rigorous scientific studies are the death knell for phenomena outside the metaphysical sphere of science’s influence. We don’t need an N of thousands with a Confidence Interval that never crosses 1 to say some things are real in spite of scientific proof. I’m ready to throw the baby out with the bath water as far as the scientific method is concerned. The bell curve is a relatively recent idea. Making assumptions about individuals because of the average experience of a large group of individuals is an aggregative fallacy. There has to be something else going on here that will explode into our consciousness once we reach the herd tipping point. IMHO
Science may be the least well equipped to answer the questions that humanity is now facing.
Thank you, Tim, I appreciate that. Science needs to get with the programme, but it is always lagging behind (and writing off the scientists at the cutting edge as 'cranks'. Science is probably well-equipped to solve things like carbon recapture, but it's very poor on fully absorbing the implications of quantum mechanics (100 years old this year!) and probably can't help us in other vital spheres either, like this one, or improving levels of empathy (which reading fiction is the very best thing for).
Hi, Ros! I wouldn't even know where to begin with sharing experiences here in a comment thread, but yes, I have (and they make great inspiration for my books)! I really enjoyed the depth in this post, and your poem is gorgeous. Wow. Thank you for sharing!
Hi! Thank you. Yes, I know, a comment thread isn't always the best place for these things unless under lock and key. But it's good to know you know what I'm talking about. Re inspiration for books, I think this is a common source; creative people are tapping into the ether of Consciousness all the time, and this is probably the true answer to that old Q&A question 'where do your ideas come from?' I'm glad you enjoyed the poem, too.
I don't know if you read Fortean Times, but I've been reading it every month for more than half my life. It's fascinating how many ordinary people report extraordinary things. Sometimes, these things can easily be explained, but other things - currently - cannot be.
I'm too deaf now to listen to podcasts without a lot of faff, so I'll have to miss The Telepathy Tapes, but I'm not overly surprised that these gifts have come to light. At a certain point with my hearing loss, I noticed that my sense of smell had become sharper. It's also a fact that the brains of people who are born deaf are wired differently - hence deaf drivers are really good drivers because they have excellent visual awareness.
It makes sense that if someone is non-verbal, they would be able to communicate with others *somehow*. When I started reading your article, I was thinking of that old chestnut - most of our communication is physical, not verbal. I find it very frustrating, because if that was true, going deaf wouldn't be as much of a barrier as it is for me. The original piece of research was, I believe, about simple "like/doesn't like", "yes/no", nothing more complicated than that. But for someone to know someone else's password, or what a question is before they're asked it - that's something else entirely.
I expect this podcast will feature in Fortean Times at some point!
You make some very good points, Helen. When we lose a facility, others tend to heighten. I haven’t read the Fortean Times, but I am aware of the Fortean Society and giving a talk for them soon. I am really glad you enjoyed this post.
Thank you, Ros. Beautiful and fascinating article. I think autism and telepathy are likely to be linked. I also agree that 'scientific materialism' in this day and age is completely unsatisfactory. Einstein thought the same. The non-local realm of David Bohm seems to be bridging the gap where e=mc2 fell short and quantum physics. Well, that's according to The Physics of God (which I'm reading at the moment and loving)...Anywhere, thank you.
Thanks, Danielle. You should listen to The Telepathy Tapes, podcast, I don't think you'd be in any doubt at all about the autism-telepathy connection if you did! It's well worth the time. Non-locality is really where we should be looking for all the things materialism can't explain.
I’ve been listening to The Telepathy Tapes—I have two episodes left. The stories relayed in the podcast are remarkable. It’s funny, because I’ve long used the example of knowing when you’re being stared at as a sort of gateway into discussing psychic phenomena with skeptical people. Most people admit that feeling is real, but aren’t willing to think about what it may imply.
These autisitc children have abilities we can’t even comprehend. I hope the podcast results in more of them getting the help they need to be understood. I also hope it helps further the conversation about the many, many things we don’t know about the world.
Pretty amazing, isn't it, Chris? I had a feeling you might be on board with this after the extraordinary manifest-a-famous-person experience you recounted a few months ago! I hope the same on the podcast front; these children have been very badly served by a system that ought to support them. Plus, the ramifications of what they can teach us are huge. I think the sheer popularity of this podcast will make a significant 'bump' in the number of people who become more open to the implications of sensations like knowing when we are being stared at.
This was riveting, Ros! At first, I was dying to comment that it’s fucking rich that people are upset at Telepathy Tapes gaining #1 over Joe Rogan. Nobody ever worried that the crap he spews is unscientific. I’ve never heard of it, but I’m intrigued.
As I read, I was hoping for a reference to Rupert Sheldrake’s work, and nearly cheered when it finally came. I’ve seen him speak a few times and he is marvelous. He had devised scientific studies of these phenomena and writes and speaks convincingly about the results.
Oddly enough last week I was drafting a post that veered into a consideration of the “world soul” (anima mundi). I know from direct experience that consciousness is the pure energy of everything, not some special human trait. Yes, it connects us all. It’s not some special ability of our brain, as the materialists insist. Every living being tunes into it to varying degrees, or for some humans, not at all. You’ve said it better than I did here, but wanted to chime in. I do have stories. One of them I wrote about here: https://open.substack.com/pub/juliegabrielli/p/three-lights?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Thank you, Julie! I know, isn't it funny, Joe Rogan's just fine at number 1, but this! I hope you'll listen to The Telepathy Tapes, it's fascinating. I was glad to discover they had Rupert Sheldrake in the podcast too; I felt so thrilled to discover his work, years ago, that a biologist was finally looking into the stuff that had so intrigued me as an undergrad. And then so frustrated to see how he was pushed aside and dismissed (but of course!) And yes, on the "world soul" - how interesting that you are on this subject right now too. Animals are far more keyed in, of course. We humans, a lot of us anyway, have really bent ourselves out of shape and are much less tapped in than we might be. Thank you for the link. I had no time the last few days (wrestling with something) but will read it later tonight.
Hi . I am thoroughly confused and not being particularly clever unsure what to make of this!!! I must read some of the references you supplied. With my first psychotic episode I was convinced evil spirits were warping my thoughts in very negative ways and for many years was sure people knew when I was thinking bad thoughts about them. In my mind I would erect a barbed wire barricade to keep my thoughts at bay and waft rose petals to the person I had thought I had offended as a token of apology . I think I probably miss the main point of your article but for my own self preservation I really want the various delusions of my schizophrenia to be just that; delusions! Though I am intrigued (and slightly frightened) about what I would do if they turned out to be real!! But thanks anyway
Hi Graham, I am sorry for causing you concern. I have a dear one who suffered as you did. There is a difference between paranoid or psychotic delusions and what they talk about on the Telepathy Tapes podcast. These experiences are entirely grounded in love. I would suggest you look after your mental health as your number one priority. Thank you for flagging up something I should have thought more carefully about.
I'm still getting over the word "materialist" which seems to mean "person who accepts conventional science"? I guess it goes along with "Stratfordian" on the Shakespeare side, someone who accepts that Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare? What's the opposite of a materialist?
I guess I don't know what territory we're in here. Are we thinking that there is some explanation for this telepathy thing to be found *within* conventional science, or that there's some mystical supernatural thing going on which will never be accessible by conventional scientific methods?
Hi Noel, you can look up materialism - a materialist is just someone wedded to that paradigm as a way of understanding the world. I wouldn’t think in terms of ‘opposites’ but there are certainly post-materialist ways of looking at the world, as I start to detail here. ‘Normal’ science is constantly getting overhauled as I also mention - Kuhn is the long-accepted authority on that. Listen to the podcast; it’s fascinating!
Conventional science has to move on / expand beyond materialism to embrace what’s going on here. This is much more in the realm of quantum biology, which is still considered cutting edge.
The other point made is these are not ‘supernatural’ processes. They are natural - these kids are natural humans, not supernatural beings.

Wow, that is amazing, Maureen, I *love* that! What a terrific example of inexplicable knowing.

So interesting Ros. I have many examples too (perhaps not for a comment) and I have never really thought about the how and why.
I will now and will try better to understand it.

Thanks Julie!
